PUNCH Media Foundation Partners U.S. Consulate on Editorial Cartooning Workshop

In furtherance of its commitment to fostering excellence and innovation in the media space, PUNCH Media Foundation (PMF) with support from the United States Consulate, Lagos, holds an Editorial Cartooning Workshop themed – Sketch and Satire: The Art and Impact of Editorial Cartooning – starting from Monday, 19 February 2024 through Thursday, 22 February 2024.

The workshop, which promises to serve as a melting pot for creativity, passion, and expertise, will bring together aspiring and experienced editorial cartoonists to explore the artistry and influence of editorial cartooning on the political, social and cultural scenes. Participants will immerse themselves in a dynamic array of interactive sessions designed to foster networking opportunities, hands-on learning with industry experts, personalised one-on-one mentoring sessions, and engaging moderated panel discussions.

The lead facilitator, Barbara Brandon-Croft, an American cartoonist, best known for creating the comic strip Where I’m Coming From, and for being the first nationally syndicated African American female cartoonist, will bring a wealth of experience to the table, offering unique perspectives and insights from the global cartooning scene. This collaboration aims to create a rich, cross-cultural flavour, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of the trade.

Other industry experts that will feature at the workshop include, Mr Tayo Fatunla, Award-winning Cartoonist, Storyteller, Comic Artist and Illustrator; Ayodele Elegba, CEO, Spoof Animation Comic Convention; Muyiwa Kayode, CEO, Lagos International Festival of Animation; Dr Akin Onipede, Editorial Cartoonist, Art Historian, and Creative Arts Professor; Ed Keazor, Art Historian, Activist, Lawyer, and Filmmaker; Dr Ganiyu Akinloye Jimoh, Cartoonist, Art Historian, Arts Professor; and Professor Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, Professor of Mass Communication.

The event will prominently feature discussions on the global discourse surrounding media freedom, good governance, national and international developments, and the significant role of editorial cartooning in accomplishing these objectives. Similar to other projects by PMF, this workshop aims not only to empower its participants but also to actively contribute to the overarching goal of fostering a vibrant civic society where media freedom thrives.

PMF expresses gratitude to the US Consulate for their goodwill and collaborative efforts towards sustainable development in Nigeria. Together, we envision a media landscape where editorial cartooning plays a crucial role in engendering sustainable social change.
